Nikon D3200 Review

The Nikon D3200 is a 24.2-megapixel DX format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera officially launched by Nikon on April 19, 2012. It is marketed as an entry-level DSLR camera for beginners and experienced DSLR hobbyists who are ready for more advanced specs and performance.

Use especially for beginners can be assisted by guide modes (integrated tutorials). It replaces the D3100 as Nikon’s entry level DSLR, but its improved image quality has been compared to that of pro DSLRs. Based on DxOMark, the Nikon D3200 entry-level crop DSLR surpassed the DxOMark Overall Sensor Score of the fullframe Canon EOS 5D Mark II, although 5D Mark II was state-of-the-art when it was launched four years before.

Its successor is the Nikon D3300 announced in January 2014 with new Nikon Expeed 4 image processor, without optical low pass filter (OLPF), 5 fps and the Nikon’s first DSLR camera with Easy (sweep) Panorama. As in the Nikon D5300, the carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer body and also the new retractable kit lens makes it smaller and lighter.

Wide dynamic range versus automatic exposure bracketing

For more details on Automatic exposure bracketing, see Autobracketing.

The dynamic range of the Nikon D3200 (Expeed 3 named Expeed 2 type, 14 bits reduced to 12 bits) exceeds even full-frame DSLRs like Nikon D3S (Expeed 2 named Expeed (1) type, 14 bits) or Canon 5D MK3 (DIGIC 5+, 14 bits) at low film speeds (ISO 100 and ISO 200) due to reduced effective resolution of the analog-to-digital converters.

The D3200 features no automatic exposure bracketing. The very high dynamic range of the Nikon D3200 makes it possible to shoot high dynamic range images (HDR, mostly created by combining multiple images with different exposures) with one shot, especially when using raw image format. The one-shot HDR method also avoids disadvantages like blurring, ghost images or other errors when merging multiple images.

Reception

DxO Labs awarded its sensor an overall score of 81, partly due to a very wide dynamic range. At time of testing the second-highest result of all APS-C DSLRs in the DxO Labs/DxOMark sensor rating was achieved, above that of much more expensive competitors. Digital Photography Review awarded the camera a score of 73% earning it a “silver award”, praising the versatility and value while also noting its “slow AF” and lack of in-camera filter effects. TechRadar gave it a score of 4/5, citing the camera’s guide mode and sensor as its strong points and its “odd colours” on the LCD screen as its weakest. T3 magazine called the D3200 “one of the best beginner DSLRs around”, stating that while “slightly pricey” and with some LCD screen problems, the guide mode and “excellent picture quality” make it “great if you’re a DSLR beginner looking for a friendly camera”.

Sunset at Mow Cop castle Nikon D200

When my Nikon D800 died the 2nd time I was in Derbyshire taking photos along side a river with my camera on a tripod when a dog ran into my camera and knocked it into the river. The camera was submerged and ceased to work. Whilst the D800 was out of action I was using my backup camera a trusty older Nikon D200.

The Nikon D200 is a great camera and semi pro model as is weather sealed and shoots 9 set brackets which is quite unusual for that age camera. I would still recommend the D200 if your shooting on a budget as you can pick these up used for less then £150. Although a crop sensor it does benefit from an autofocus motor so you can use older lenses unlike the entry level model Nikons i.e. 3000 / 3100 / 3200. Great camera for the money.

Where the D200 lacks is its high ISO gets very grainy over 800 ISO and its battery life is very poor even though it has no live view.

This photo was taken at Mow Cop castle in Derbyshire using the Nikon D200 with the Samyang 14mm Lens at F11, ISO 100 and 7 brackets. With tweaks in Photoshop, Nik and Topaz.

Nikon D5000 Review

The D5000 is a 12.3-megapixel DX-format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera, announced by Nikon on 14 April 2009. The D5000 has many features in common with the D90. It features a 2.7-inch 230,000-dot resolution tilt-and-swivel LCD monitor (D90 is 3.0-inch (76 mm), 920,000 pixel, without swivel or tilt), live view, ISO 200–3200 (100–6400 with Boost), 3D tracking Multi-CAM1000 11-point AF system, active D-Lighting system and automatic correction of lateral chromatic aberration. The D5000 seems to be discontinued in November 2010. Although it is listed as discontinued on the Nikon Japan website, it was still available in other regions as of April 2011.

It was the second Nikon DSLR camera to feature movie mode after the feature was introduced by the D90, though this capability has now been extended to other models as well, such as the D300S and the D3S. Some newer models are even capable of 1080p 24 frame/s video, such as the Nikon D3100, Nikon D5100 and the Nikon D7000. As with the D90, each uninterrupted movie shot at 720p is limited to 5 minutes duration and 20 minutes for all other resolutions (the D7000 can do 20 min movies). One-button Live View mode features subject tracking and face detection auto-focus modes.

Nikon D3000 Review

The Nikon D3000 is a 10.2-megapixel DX format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera announced by Nikon on 30 July 2009. It replaces the D40 as Nikon’s entry level DSLR. It features a 3.0-inch 230,000-dot resolution LCD monitor, CCD sensor with ISO 100–1600 (3200 with Boost) and 3D tracking Multi-CAM1000 11-point AF system which makes it quite similar to the Nikon D200 in these main parts. Initially priced with $599 MSRP, actual prices are much lower.

The D3000 was superseded by the D3100 on August 19, 2010. The D3000 is the final Nikon DSLR to use a CCD sensor.

The Nikon D3100 is a 14.2-megapixel DX format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera announced by Nikon on August 19, 2010. It replaced the D3000 as Nikon’s entry level DSLR. It introduced Nikon’s new EXPEED 2 image processor and was the first Nikon DSLR featuring full high-definition video recording with full-time autofocus and H.264 compression, instead of Motion JPEG compression. It was also the first Nikon DSLR to provide high-definition video recording at more than one frame rate.

Use is assisted by two Guide Modes: Easy Operation and Advanced Operation tutorial. On April 19, 2012, the D3200 superseded the D3100 as Nikon’s entry-level DSLR.
